Intelligent weather – How Understanding Weather Patterns Can Lead to Better Decision-Making

September 2015

I researched and wrote a brochure for the Met Office on how understanding weather patterns can lead to better decision-making.

Weather patterns, the brochure explains, are used by the Met Office for medium- and longer range forecasting. They help meteorologists to condense the vast volume of weather data available and visualise the most probable patterns out to seven weeks ahead.

These patterns can help many others to see how the different weather parameters – temperature, precipitation, wind speed, cloud cover and snowfall – interrelate to each other by providing a single snapshot of what the weather is doing. This information can then be used to anticipate a very broad set of impacts such as fog for the aviation industry, ice for the road network and grid faults for the energy sector, helping them to plan ahead.
